Valentine's Day Is For Suckers

Recently eaten: pasta, ham, peas
Recent annoyance: running out the door only to realize you've left something important all the way on the third floor

It's no secret that I am no fan of Valentine's Day. It was fun for a few years in school when everyone got candy and crappy little paper cards with cartoon characters on them. But then people started to take it really seriously. Dinner, flowers, chocolates, sappy cards, blech!

I've found a better substitute for Valentine's Day: VE Day. For the hardcore, for the veterans, for the patriots, for the kids.

"On Mar. 7 the Western Allies—whose chief commanders in the field were Omar N. Bradley and Montgomery—crossed the Rhine after having smashed through the strongly fortified Siegfried Line and overran W Germany. German collapse came after the meeting (Apr. 25) of the Western and Russian armies at Torgau in Saxony, and after Hitler's death amid the ruins of Berlin, which was falling to the Russians under marshals Zhukov and Konev. The unconditional surrender of Germany was signed at Reims on May 7 and ratified at Berlin on May 8."

No contest really. Which looks like more fun to you?
