I am back from my second trip to Reyjavik and am ready to share some culinary peculiarities. There does not seem to be an indigenous diet there unless you count cigarettes and shots of Fisherman's Friend.
1) Hot dogs: First rate especially from gas stations. They come with onions, friend onions, and assorted condiments. They also sell hot dogs wrapped in bacon, which, once proliferated throughout the globe, may end all wars.
2) Hlolla Batar: A sandwich stand in the center of downtown Reykjavik with the best sandwiches in town. Basically the equivalent of Jumbo Slice in DC, it hopping around 3 AM when the town drunks needs some fuel to continue drinking. Try the Sherriff Boat, roast beef, onions, mayonnaise, and some other stuff that I couldn't taste. You know you went to Hlolla Batar the night before if you find mayo all over your clothes the next morning.
3) Thai food: The Thai population, owing to an explosion of mail-order brides in the last 10 years, has a tight hold on tasty, yet affordable Asian food. They also make a mean fish and chips.
4) Whale meat: Dense, lean steak with a slight tinge of fishiness. We ate whale at a tiny shack on the harbor served by a guy that looked like Dr. Klopek from the movie "the 'Burbs." He didn't speak any english but the whale kebabs were called the Moby Dick special. I kid you not. Seasoned with fresh cracked black pepper and salt, they were grilled with some veggies. Delicious, but so filling!
