Ode to Lucky
I.
Goodbye, old friend. You fine connosieur of dirty socks.
We brought you home way back then and you were just a fluff ball.
When we put you in your crate, you cried, and then I cried.
Then we realized you had taken a big poo. I'd cry too of I had to sit in my own poo.
On the hottest days of summer, you would stretch out on the cool kitchen tiles, feet outstretched.
I wondered if maybe you would grow some sweat glands.
I pant when I get hot too.
II.
Mom tried to trick you by spelling out W-A-L-K.
So you learned how to spell. You'd come running, wagging your tail.
So Mom switched to Chinese. But you learned that too. Which is more that I can say for myself.
III.
Dad fed you all the roast beef from his sandwiches. You ate more if it than he did.
And you loved his sweat pants, in the biblical sense.
I guess people have humped worse thing than a pair of sweat pants.
Dad would take them off, change into shorts and leave the pants in a heap on the floor.
We never did neuter you.
IV.
Your feet smelled like nachos.
You loved grapes and ice cream.
You snored louder than Dad.
You licked people's feet like it was going out of style.
You were a damn fine dog.
End of the Road by Boyz II Men plays. Curtain.

good bye lucky :-(
(dude. you're just like my dad!)
but seriously. hope the ode made you feel better.
A touching tribute. Compelling and rich.
Brings the fragility of existence right to the forefront of the audience's mind. Plus the idea of smelling a dog's feet is just gutsy.
I shed a tear for that one.
I feel for you, Phoebe, Lucky was obviously your doppleganger, because you, like Lucky, enjoy ice cream, grapes and licking people's feet.
